With the final report of 2016 issued, the total number of expatriates has reached 5,411. This is up 26 percent from the 4,279 people who renounced their citizenship in 2015 and 58 percent higher than the 3,415 people who left in 2014. This sudden spike in expatriation began about five years ago. However, he probably isn&#8217;t helping matters. The actual reason is that it is very costly for Americans to live in other countries because they are one of the very few nationalities who have to pay taxes in their home country even when living abroad. This law was set up during the Civil War as a way to punish those who fled the country rather than staying to fight. This has led to some unusual cases of taxation. For example, Britain&#8217;s foreign minister Boris Johnson had dual citizenship with the USA even though he hasn&#8217;t lived there since he was a child. However, when he sold his London home he suddenly found himself owing a large sum of money in taxes from the sale. Johnson was one of the 5,411 who renounced their citizenship in 2016 as a result. Of course, the US is not in danger of a declining population.
